ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
ਹਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਹਾਂ ਇਕ ਦਮੀ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਿਨਵੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਅੰਧੇ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇ ਦਿਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਸਾਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਖਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਏਵ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੇ ਪਰਵਦਗਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਦੇਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਢੈ ਗਹਣਾ ॥ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਿਨਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ ਲਹਣਾ ॥੩॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਆ ਕਪਟੀ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਣਾ ॥ ਜਮ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਜਾ ਪਕਿੜ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਚਲਦਾ ਪਛੁਤਾਣਾ ॥੪॥ ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਰਹੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥ ਭਾਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਮ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੀਵਤਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੫॥੨॥
ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਅਸੀ ਆਦਮੀ ਇਕ ਦਮ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਹਾਂ (ਕੀਹ ਪਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦਮ ਕਦੋਂ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਏ? ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਮਿਆਦ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਵਕਤ ਕਦੋਂ ਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ । ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ— (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰੋ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਸ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ।੧। ਹੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ! (ਅੱਖਾਂ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ) ਵੇਖ, ਸੋਚ ਸਮਝ, ਇਥੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਥੋੜੇ ਹੀ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ। (ਹੇ ਸਦਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਇਹ ਸੁਆਸ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਆਪਣਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੇਹ, (ਪਰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ? ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੇਰਾ ਢਾਢੀ ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਇਹ ਹੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਹੇ ਸਦਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਆਪਣਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੇਹ) ।੨। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ! ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਦੇਵੇਂ, ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸ ਕੋਈ ਐਸ਼ੀ ਸ਼ੈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਵੱਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਹਾਝ ਲਏ । ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਤਾ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ ਲੇਖ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੇਣੀ ਹੈ) ।੩। (ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ) ਛਲੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਾਂ ਛਲ ਹੀ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ । (ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਲੰਘਾ ਕੇ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਜਦੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਵਲ ਧੱਕਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੱਥ ਮਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਦ ਤਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਊਣਾ ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਨੀ-ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ (ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ, ਤੇ ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੈਠ ਰਹਿਣਾ) । ਅਸੀ ਢੂੰਡ ਚੁਕੇ ਹਾਂ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਇਥੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਜੀਵਨ-ਅਵਸਰ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਸਨਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮਰ ਕੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰੀਏ ।੫।੨।
धनासरी महला १ ॥
हम आदमी हां इक दमी मुहलति मुहतु न जाणा ॥ नानकु बिनवै तिसै सरेवहु जा के जीअ पराणा ॥१॥ अंधे जीवना वीचारि देखि केते के दिना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ सासु मासु सभु जीउ तुमारा तू मै खरा पिआरा ॥ नानकु साइरु एव कहतु है सचे परवदगारा ॥२॥ जे तू किसै न देही मेरे साहिबा किआ को कढै गहणा ॥ नानकु बिनवै सो किछु पाईऐ पुरबि लिखे का लहणा ॥३॥ नामु खसम का चिति न कीआ कपटी कपटु कमाणा ॥ जम दुआरि जा पकड़ि चलाइआ ता चलदा पछुताणा ॥४॥ जब लगु दुनीआ रहीऐ नानक किछु सुणीऐ किछु कहीऐ ॥ भालि रहे हम रहणु न पाइआ जीवतिआ मरि रहीऐ ॥५॥२॥
Dhanaasaree, First Mehl:
We are human beings of the briefest moment; we do not know the appointed time of our departure. Prays Nanak, serve the One, to whom our soul and breath of life belong. ||1|| You are blind – see and consider, how many days your life shall last. ||1||Pause|| My breath, my flesh and my soul are all Yours, Lord; You are so very dear to me. Nanak, the poet, says this, O True Lord Cherisher. ||2|| If you gave nothing, O my Lord and Master, what could anyone pledge to You? Nanak prays, we receive that which we are pre-destined to receive. ||3|| The deceitful person does not remember the Lord’s Name; he practices only deceit. When he is marched in chains to Death’s door, then, he regrets his actions. ||4|| As long as we are in this world, O Nanak, we should listen, and speak of the Lord. I have searched, but I have found no way to remain here; so, remain dead while yet alive. ||5||2||

ham aadmee haaN ik damee muhlat muhat na jaanaa. naanak binvai tisai sarayvhu jaa kay jee-a paraanaa. ||1|| anDhay jeevnaa veechaar daykh kaytay kay dinaa. ||1|| rahaa-o. saas maas sabh jee-o tumaaraa too mai kharaa pi-aaraa. naanak saa-ir av kahat hai sachay parvadgaaraa. ||2|| jay too kisat na dayhee mayray saahibaa ki-aa ko kadhai gahnaa. naanak binvai so kichh paa-ee-ai purab likhay kaa lahnaa. ||3|| naam khasam kaa chit na kee-aa kaptee kapat kamaanaa. jam du-aar jaa pakarh chalaa-i-aa taa chaldaa pachhutaanaa. ||4|| jab lag dunee-aa rahee-ai naanak kichh sunee-ai kichh kahee-ai. bhaal rahay ham rahan na paa-i-aa jeevti-aa mar rahee-ai. ||5||2||
